What is Testogel used for?
Testogel is used for the treatment of low testosterone in men. It is one option for testosterone replacement therapy in men with low or no production of natural testosterone (hypogonadism).
How does Testogel work?
Testogel or androgel are gels that contain the active ingredient testosterone, which is the same as the naturally occurring male hormone testosterone. It replaces the testosterone produced in your body to ensure normal levels.
Testosterone is known as an androgen – one of the male steroidal hormones. It is produced mainly by the testicles and is the main hormone essential for normal male growth and development. It is responsible for the development of the male sex organs and male sexual characteristics. It is also very important for mood, energy levels, sexual desire and physical strength.
Testosterone in men is essential for the production of sperm, the maintenance of erectile potency, and the functioning of the prostate gland and other reproductive structures. It also has functions in the skin, muscles, skeleton, kidney, liver, bone marrow and central nervous system.
Low levels of testosterone can cause decreased sex drive, inability to achieve an erection, infertility (due to decreased sperm production), decreased mental and physical activity, fatigue and weakening of bones (osteoporosis). Testogel is given as testosterone replacement therapy when natural testosterone levels fall too low, causing the issues above.
Natural testosterone levels often fall with age and fall rapidly following surgical removal of the testicles. They also fall due to decreased functioning of the testicles (hypogonadism or eunuchoidism), or by decreased gonadotrophin production by the pituitary gland, as a result of pituitary disease. There are many reasons that men nowadays appear to have testosterone levels 20% lower than they were 20 years ago.
Testosterone replacement therapy allows testosterone levels to return to normal, thus relieving the symptoms.
Testogel is applied to the skin, often on the shoulders or an area with low likelihood of contact. The testosterone is absorbed through the skin into the bloodstream.

How do I use it?
Testogel is applied once a day, usually in the morning, to the shoulders or another area of low contact with other people. It should only be applied by the man being treated. You should shower before applying the gel to allow it to be absorbed effectively. Apply the gel onto clean, dry, healthy, unbroken skin over the shoulders, upper arms or abdomen.
Wash your hands with soap and water after applying the gel.
Allow the gel to dry for a few minutes before dressing.
If you forget to apply the Testogel at your usual time and it is 12 hours or more until your next application is due then you should apply the gel as soon as you remember. If it is less than 12 hours until your next application is due just leave out the missed application and apply the gel as usual when it is next due. Don’t apply twice the amount of Testogel to make up for a missed application.
If contact is likely between the application area and someone other than the patient, the area should be washed before contact occurs. This reduces the risk of transfer of the testosterone, particularly to women or children.
Precautions
Skin contact with Testogel:
Testogel should only be applied to the skin as described above. It should not be taken by mouth or internally.
Testogel / Tostran / Androgel can be transferred to others by skin contact. If a women or child comes into contact with the application area then masculinising effects can occur. This could cause symptoms such as growth of facial and/or body hair, deepening of the voice or irregularities of the menstrual cycle.
How to avoid risks with Testogel
To avoid these risks the application area should be one of low contact risk and any contact with the area should be preceded by washing of the area. The application area should be covered by clothing whilst it absorbs for at least 1 hour and ideally 6 hours. After 1 hour it can be washed off to allow contact with a non-treated person. In this instance the dosage will be reduced. Therefore allowing 6 hours of absorption before showering, bathing or swimming provides an increased uptake of testosterone.
Assessment for Testogel use
Anyone taking TRT needs to have frequent blood tests to ensure optimal levels of testosterone, oestrogen and other hormones.
This treatment should only be used by patients who have been assessed by a professional, GMC certified doctor. They should be deemed to have testosterone deficiency and be safe and suitable for this treatment.
